Behind glass

Dear Blog,

At almost every cafe or store I come across, I am greeted with an elaborate display window. I used to work at a bakery so I do understand the importance of a display window but I have never seen such elaborate displays in such quantity. First in, first out of course, but I always used to put the cutest cookies in front. It really is the shallow game that of course we all play, I never really know what is in the sandwich I just go off of what looks best. Which shows how much the display matters.

There is something about my food being trapped behind the glass that causes me to look at it all the more fondly. Like a zoo animal. what secrets does the salami, cheese, mayo and spring greens sandwich hold? What is it trying to tell me through the glass?

I love the little army of circular sweets, mini fruit tarts and cream puffs, sitting at the bottom of the display, all bunched up, like little jumping beans. There is also something quite comforting about knowing I don't have to eat any of the things I am looking at, I can simply observe. Little sweet treats are so easy on the eyes but I don't really love any of them except for a fruit tart. But I like to imagine that I am getting one of each thing in every display window.
