I love the beach
Dear Blog,
Yesterday, May 27th, we went to Livorno and laid on the beaches of Rosignano Marittimo in Castiglioncello. On our walk there I soaked up the sweet smell of the beach town. I love going to beach towns. Somehow there is always something so familiar about them. Tan, calm people walking small dogs drinking interesting drinks like kombucha or some weird type of coffee. Little shops selling wildly expensive light cream colored crochet bags and sweaters.
We made made our way down to the beach and walked on rocks, not sand, but little rocks. Most beaches I've been to in europe are rocky beaches, rather than sand beaches. It hurt our feet but we had a one track mind, our heads set on relaxing. And relax we did.
Towels laid out, sandwiches in hand, we got to it. We ate cherries and pistachios, listened to the waves and enjoyed the view.
We had a surprise visit from the invisible man.
This beach was shell rich! We found such cool shells.
Most of the little rocks at this beach had a green tint to them. Why? The rocks are gabbro which is a type of igneous rock which contains minerals including plagioclase. Over time plagioclase undergoes alteration and turns a light green. Most of the little rocks on this beach are gabbroic rocks which causes the whole beach to have a subtle green tint.
After a couple of very pleasant hours it was time to go. We took the train back home, we were salty and tired but we were so happy. I can't believe there's just a week and a half left of our program.
